Liability

The system provides general, board legal, and professional liability insurance.

General (public) liability insurance covers claims for property damage and/or bodily harm to third parties. The system’s self-insurance program for liability is supplemented by commercial excess insurance.

Faculty or staff must be legally liable for coverage to apply. However, public liability coverage does not include medical payment (no-fault) benefits. Public liability claims against the U of I System may fall under the protection of the Illinois Court of Claims.

Board legal liability insurance covers alleged claims of civil rights violations, sexual harassment, discrimination, American Disabilities Act violations, employment practices, wrongful termination, retaliation, and other claims that may be filed in the Federal Court system. In addition, coverage extends to directors, officers, and employees who may be individually named in these claims.

Professional liability (errors and omissions) insurance covers claims resulting from mistakes, failure to perform, and/or inaccurate advice that causes financial harm.
